Tour Details
Day 01 Addis Ababa.
Tour the Ethnographic Museum, a great introduction to Ethiopian culture and history. Visit the Mercato, one of Africa's largest outdoor markets. Trinity Cathedral. Overnight Hotel.
Day 02 Addis Ababa - Awash National Park.
Early morning drive from Addis Ababa to Awash National Park. Sightseeing in Awash National Park. Overnight hotel
Day 03 Awash National Park - Semera - Logi.
Scenic drive to Semera. Process paperwork for journey into Afar. Continue to Logi for accommodations. Overnight Hotel
Day 04 Logi - Afdera.
Drive to Afdera. Overnight Hotel.
Day 05 Afdera - Dodom - Erta Alle.
Drive from Afrera to Dodom. Trek 15 kilometers to the Erta Alle volcano lake, 613 meters above sea level. Arrive at Erta Alle around midnight and walk to see the spectacular volcanic eruption. Set up camp and rest near, but upwind from the eruption.
Overnight Camping
Day 06 Erta Alle - Ahmedela.
Return trek to Dodom. Drive to Ahmedela and set up camp. Overnight Camping
Day 07 Ahmedela - Berhaile.
Drive to Lake Asale and watch the salt workers as they cut bricks of salt from the lake bed. The bricks are then sold on the market and loaded on camel caravans for transport to the highlands. Proceed to Dalol and view the dramatic and colorful geological formations caused by the hot springs rich in sulfur, potash, and salt. Drive to Berhaile and make camp. Overnight Camping
Day 08 Berhaile - Mekele.
Drive to Mekele. En route visit an Afar village perched on the escarpment of the Great Rift Valley. Overnight Hotel.
Day 09 Mekele - Addis Ababa.
Fly to Addis Ababa on Ethiopian Airlines. Visit the National Museum, home of the 3.18 million year old skeleton "Lucy." Optional souvenir shopping in the afternoon. Farewell dinner at a traditional Ethiopian restaurant featuring dancers and musicians representing some of the country's many ethnic groups.
